India’s presidency of the G20 summit came to a close on Saturday with the signing of the Delhi Declaration, a joint agreement that sets out a roadmap for cooperation on a range of issues, including economic growth, climate change, and global health.
The summit was hailed as a success by Indian officials, who said it had demonstrated India’s growing stature on the world stage and its ability to bring together the world’s major economies to address common challenges.
“This was India’s finest hour in international affairs,” said Amitabh Kant, India’s G20 Sherpa. “We brought together the most economically powerful nations of the world in a consensus on diverse and divisive issues.”
The Delhi Declaration includes commitments to promote sustainable economic growth, address climate change, and improve global health. It also calls for reforms to the global financial system and for greater cooperation on issues such as terrorism and cyber security.
The summit was not without its challenges. The war in Ukraine was a major issue of contention, with some countries calling for tougher sanctions against Russia and others urging a negotiated settlement. However, the summit was able to reach a consensus on the need to address the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and to support the country’s economic recovery.
The summit also saw India play a leading role in promoting the interests of the developing world. India was successful in getting the African Union admitted as a permanent member of the G20, and it also pushed for greater representation of developing countries in the world’s financial institutions.
The G20 summit was a major success for India, and it helped to cement the country’s position as a rising power on the world stage. The summit also showed that India is a responsible stakeholder in the global community, and that it is committed to working with other countries to address the challenges of the 21st century.
